Downsizing Blues
Recently there's been some talk about how some people are feeling negative about the downsizing occurring in their company. They're feeling insecure about whether more layoffs are still coming and if they might be next. As a result, some are less committed in their work and even badmouthing their employer.
It never ceases to amaze me how many people can turn a positive into a negative. You would think that while others in one's organization are losing their employment, that those who are able to keep their jobs would not only be elated that they are still employed, but would work even harder to continue to keep their jobs.
Maybe I'm naive, but when that has happened to me in the past, I've redoubled my efforts to ensure I don't suffer the same fate as my less fortunate alumni.
The other side of the downsizing coin is, if you're one of the few still standing after a layoff - what an opportunity to show how you can expand your role and responsibilities. So when the economy turns around and the company starts rehiring, you'll be in a great position to get one of the better jobs!
For those who find themselves still on the 'inside' after a layoff and might start feeling negative about their situation, I suggest thinking about these things:
1 - There is nothing in business or organizational life that is guaranteed.Consider all employment as temporary. There are millions without work, so make the most of your employment while you can.
2 - Recognize that you are a business unto yourself. Your current income stream just happens to be this employment right now, but you could be doing something different next month. In other words, constantly look at potential future opportunities because you will need them someday.
3 - Invest in YOU, the most important asset you will ever have. Increase the value of you so that you will be ready for a wider variety of opportunities when they present themselves.
Lest you think that luck is the determining factor in one's success, consider this:
Success is when 'preparation' meets 'opportunity'. Constantly work on both,so that when you pursue and find an opportunity, you will be ready to take advantage of it.
I'm reminded of that old adage, "Success is only a matter of luck - ask any failure".
